The Project consists of the development of new and rehabilitation of existing infrastructure (ferry transportation, road, water supply and electricity supply) to service the needs of households, businesses, institutions and residents of Bugala Island.
In the deal signed between KIS and the Ministry of Works Transport licensing Kalangala Infrastructure Services (KIS) to begin construction of two ferries to provide safe, reliable, efficient and regular ferry services between Luku on Bugala Island, Kalangala District and Bukakata, Masaka District. The ferries will replace the current government ferry known as Bukakata ferry, which is said to be inefficient.
Speaking during the signing of the agreement recently, John Nasasira, the Minister for Works and Transport, said: “This is indeed a historic development for the people of Kalangala [who] for the last 20 years have been relying on the government-run ferry, which though providing a vital service makes unscheduled voyages hence making it inconvenient for the local inhabitants, tourists and business people to plan their crossing times."*
